Washington DC and environs - I've spent a lot of time working in Washington, D.C. from 1986-2014. Most of these images are from the early 2000s, although some are from the final visit during which I took pictures in April 2014. (I think I was back in 2015-16 but didn't have the time or desire to explore.) In addition to getting shots of the usual monuments, during my extended stays I also visited wildlife refuges and museums in Maryland, Delaware and Virginia.

Braintree Hawks - Since 2002, a pair of hawks has been raising babies in a tree within view of my office in Braintree, Mass. After single chicks in 2002 and 2003, the pair had twins in 2004. In 2005, they moved a little further away to a tree across the street. Here are images from all four years. Click on any thumbnail to start photo show at that point.

June 8, 2004 Venus Transit - Unlike the May 30, 2003 Annular Eclipse which I had to go to Iceland to view, I was able to see at least a part of the transit of Venus across the face of the Sun from my back yard. There were some clouds when I got up, but by the time my equipment was in place at 6:10 a.m. it was clear enough to see the black dot of Venus crawling across the face of the sun. In Europe they were able to see the full event, but from my location on the East Coast I saw about the last hour of it. Photos of the full sun were taken with a Canon 1D, 300mm f4 lens, stacked 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, ISO 200, exposure between 1/80 @ f11 and 1/100 @f16. There must have been a slight haze in the air because this was slower shutter speed than my tests the previous weekend. The closeup was taken with a digiscope consisting of a Meade ETX 125 telescope, a 20mm eyepiece, and a Canon S330 2-megapixel camera. I'm not sure of my calculations, but I think the view below is 135x.
No mistaking where to look. Venus Transit.
 I didn't quite get the so-called teardrop effect, but this is near the end of the transit. I'll try again in 2012.
Venus Transit 2004		 At this magnification the rotation of the earth quickly carried the planet and sun out of the telescopes's field of view. That's why the image is slightly motion-blurred. Only three large bodies come between the Sun and the Earth: Venus, the Moon (as seen from Iceland last year) and Mercury. The next Mercury transit is in 2006. It will be a much smaller dot than either Venus or (certainly) the Moon. Digiscoped with Canon S330 camera and Meade ETX 125 telescope, June 2004.

 I have dozens of bad woodpecker photos. This Downey Woodpecker was in a dark forested area at Daniel Webster Wildlife Sanctuary. I got a few ISO 1600 shots. I do not like to do a lot of image manipulation, but it was necessary to call upon some of Photoshop’s capabilities to control the high ISO noise.

 One of my first digiscoping efforts, Braintree Hawk. Could not get this tight with a conventional telephoto lens to show the cottonwood fluff stuck in the branches, but shooting with this setup on a cloudy day through a thick window muddied the sharpness and contrast.

I got a new squirrel-proof bird feeder in 2004. However, this little fellow proved that it is not chipmunk-proof.

 The Enola Gay at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Dulles Airport in Chantilly, Va., a new branch of the National Air and Space Museum. The Enola Gay is credited with saving the lives of hundreds of thousands of US servicemen in WWII.
B-29 Enola Gay		 At the new Air and Space museum, this unflown Mercury capsule was for a 1963 Alan Shepard mission, but NASA decided instead to end the Mercury program and move on to Gemini. It was named Friendship 7 II after Shepard’s original 1961 capsule.
